Shape learning is an important part of early childhood education. By learning about different shapes, children develop important skills such as problem-solving, spatial reasoning, and critical thinking. Fortunately, there are many fun and engaging shape learning activities that can be done in the classroom or at home. Let’s dive in!
Ways to Make Learning Shapes Fun
- Shape Scavenger Hunt: This activity is perfect for getting kids moving while they learn about shapes. Give children a list of shapes to find, such as circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles, and have them search the room or house for objects that match each shape. For example, they could find a clock for a circle, a book for a rectangle, or a slice of pizza for a triangle. We absolutely love doing this when we are driving in the car to run errands!
2. Shape Matching Game: Download this FREE shape matching game. This game is simple- and fun! Cut out the small plain colored shapes. Shuffle them together, or for added fun hide them around the room you are playing in. Take one shape at a time and match it to the shape naming card.
3. Shape Painting: Provide children with different shaped stencils and encourage them to use them to create their own shape paintings. This activity helps children recognize different shapes and develop their fine motor skills. I also love doing this simple shape art project: Draw a simple shape on a piece of paper, such as a square. Give it to the child you are working with and tell them to turn it in to their own creative animal. It’s so fun to see the designs they come up with!
4. Shape Playdough: Use playdough to create different shapes and teach children about their characteristics. Have children create their own shapes using playdough and discuss their properties, such as the number of sides and corners.
5. Shape Learning Packet: I have also designed this shape learning packet. It’s been a great help for my children and students. It covers all the basic shapes children need to know by kindergarten. It includes tracing and drawing pages, flashcards, and other activity pages.
