If you have a preschooler at home, or teach preschool in the classroom, you know that teaching colors is not only a necessity, but something they love to learn. Everywhere their little eyes look and play, they see colors all around. They want to tell you the colors they see and find out all the colors they can. That is why including preschool color learning activities into your every day play or classroom lessons is not only fun, but essential!
Preschool Color Activities- Color Flashcards
When introducing colors to preschoolers, I like to start by simply displaying the colors they may find around them. Then, use simple flashcards to talk about the color name. I hold up a flash card, say the color name, and then ask, “Who can find something this color around the room?” I then display these flashcards in the room as we continue to learn so they can be referenced back to for future activities and games.

Preschool Color Activities- Sorting
After the basic colors have been introduced, I like to play this simple, but effect color sorting game. When it comes to preschool color learning activities and games, this is one of my favorite! And, the best part, after you’ve printed off the flashcards its basically zero prep.
Here’s how the game works: Pick a flash card color to work on. Set a timer. Tell the child to find as many objects around the room that matches the flash card color before the timer runs out. Sound simple? It is! Sound fun? It really is! My son loved playing this game and ran as fast as his little feet would carry him to find all the green objects he could find.
Color Activities-Sorting
Once they are all tired out from running around finding fun objects around the room, I love to rest and do a little fine motor color sorting. There are many options for this, but the one pictured above is one of our favorites! When we completed the activity above, we did it with some speech therapy practice. That is what the picture cards on the right were for. But, for simply color sorting, all you need is this color sorting mat:
Print and then play! Roll small balls of play doh and place them on each color. Then, place a piece of spaghetti in each ball. The thicker spaghetti noodles work best. Then, pour a bowl of fruit loops and let the sorting begin! Simple slide the matching colors of fruit loops on to each spaghetti noodle until all the colors have been sorted. The best part about this game, is you can steal a quick snack every now and then as you play!
Other Color Learning Activities and Games
After these fun activities are complete, I like to really dive in to all of the colors with matching games, more sorting activities, coloring and more. I like to use print and go activities that make it easy to learn when my preschooler gets excited about colors! My favorite activities come from here:

I’m not the only one who thinks these activities are fun. One buyer said, “This is the most wonderful resource for teaching colors. Vibrant and relevant pictures make these activities perfect for your color unit.”
Whether it’s using the color flashcards, playing a simple sorting game, using my free color sorting mat, or any of the fun activities in my color packet, learning colors can be easy, and fun! Your preschooler will soon be spouting off all the colors they know with these fun preschool color learning activities.
