We are in full on kindergarten preparation mode at our house right now. My son has been working on letter names and sounds at preschool and at home with me for the past few years. Some of them are still very tricky. So, we are doing all we can to make learning fun and help those letters sink in before he begins kindergarten this Fall! Today I am sharing some games to review letter names and sounds at home.
Bean Bag Toss Alphabet Review Game
Any time my boys can throw a ball, a bean bag, or some other item, they are happy. This bean bag alphabet review game is simple, yet effective! I taped letter flashcards on to each bowl. I would call out a letter name and they would have to throw their bean bag in to the bowl. To make it more of a competition, we counted up who threw in the most bean bags each time. Make sure to always include calling out letter sounds, so they can solidify learning those as well.

Balloon Toss Game to Review Letter Names and Sounds
This game can get a little wild, but is oh so fun! Set a pile of letter flashcards on a table or area nearby. Blow up a balloon. Toss the balloon in the air and do all you can as a team to not let the balloon drop. Anytime the balloon does fall on the ground, stop, pick up a letter flashcard and practice saying the letter name and sound. This is a very easy way to review letter names and sounds at home!
Writing Letters Game
As important as it is to learn letter names and sounds, it’s equally as important to be able to write those letters. Fill up a pie pan with a sensory material. I have found beans, sand, small pom poms, or pebbles to work best. Hold up a letter flashcard. Say the letter name and sound and practice writing it in the material.
Pom Pom Game to Review Letter Names and Sounds
Everyone has toilet paper rolls. I love using them before we throw them away for a fun game to review letter names and sounds. Use some type of jar or bowl to catch pom poms in. Tape the toilet paper rolls up on a wall or window so that the pom poms will land in the jar. Tape a letter flashcard on to each jar. Call out a letter name or sound and drop the pom pom down the toilet paper trail that will land in that letter.
Letter Name and Sound Review
This is one of the easiest ways to review letter names and sounds at home, but also one of the most effective. Write a couple of letters the child is struggling with on a piece of paper and hang it somewhere you walk by a lot. This time, I hung it on the door of our fridge. Each time we walk by, I point to a letter and he says the name of that letter. Once he masters the names, I will have him say the sounds. Make sure to rotate the order you right the letters every few days so they don’t just memorize the order!
