This weeks preschool theme was All About Me. It was perfect to do at the beginning of the school year! We completed 5 days of fun, easy, and efficient activities to help learn the letter S, the #2, introduce task cards, do art projects, sensory bins, learn the color red, and much more! This All about Me preschool theme was a great success.
The Letter S
One of our main focuses this week was on learning the letter S. We learned it’s name, sound and how to write an uppercase and lowercase S. Since the S sound is something we are working on in Speech therapy, it felt good to hit that at the same time. We practiced correctly saying the S sound with each S picture we pulled out of the sensory bin, completed a fun sun art project, made play doh letter S’s, and sang songs about us. Overall, it was a great way to learn the letter S.
Handwriting Tip
While practicing the letter S, we put in to practice a handwriting tip we were shown at occupational therapy. We have a tough time holding our pencil correctly. It’s usually a giant hand grip with all of our fingers. While completing this entire All About me preschool theme, we practiced the “pillow” handwriting tip. We used the analogy of having our middle finger be a pillow when holding the pencil. The thumb and index finger hold on tight, and the middle finger is the pillow for the pencil to rest on. It was a great help! For the first time he began holding his pencil with the correct grip and without prompting, and was able to write even the tricky letter S without too much frustration. I was grateful for this handwriting tip for our O.T.
Who Am I? Art Project
Along with doing preschool at home, my son is also attending a neighborhood preschool. He’s been so excited to get out and do school with friends. He was asked to bring a small body that looks like him. She gave us the body outline, and we could make it however we wanted. So, we got to work! I cut out a variety of pants, mouths, shoes, shirts, hats, etc and set them out. He got to choose which he felt looked like what he would wear and glue them on. I loved the way it turned out! This would be an easy art project to do at home as well, and a great way to learn “Who Am I?”
Painting Tip
We painted for several activities this week, including our letter S sun art project. I love using real paint, not just watercolors, because it is just so much more fun! But, it is also messy. Using a cookie sheet to hold the paper on is a great way to paint without getting all of the mess. For the littlest painters, you can even tape down the picture so it doesn’t move while they paint. It’s a simple, but efficient painting tip!
Other Fun for All About Me
There were so many other activities we did this week, including learning the color Red and going on a red scavenger hunt, learning the #2 and comparing it the number one, matching games, cutting practice, sensory bins, and much more. Overall, it was a really fun and really success All About Me Preschool theme week!
