The worry of every parents, whose child just finished preschool, or of every preschooler teaching sending their students out the door for the summer is, “are they ready for kindergarten?” The standards today for kindergarteners, are far higher than they’ve ever been. They are going to learn amazing things once they enter those doors, and truly excel! But, they have to be prepared. Today I’m sharing with you some tips and tricks to help your little ones or students over the summer so they are ready. So here are some kindergarten ready summer review ideas for your preschooler!
Make It Fun
If your child is anything like a typical preschool age child, they want to play. And when summer hits, they want to play all day long! So, what they means is, school needs to include so many aspects of playing! Make it fun. It does not need to be all paper and pencil work (although that is equally as important to get their fine motor skills prepared.) It should include a lot of fun.
One of the best ways I know to make it fun is my “mailbox trick.” Find a used mailbox or an inexpensive one. I believe I found this mailbox for about $15. For fun, decorate it up. We call this our special mailbox, and my children know that when the flag goes up, something is inside.
Today, I placed activities in envelopes for each of my children. Each envelope had their name on it, so they could each open up the mailbox and not fight over whose was whose. My oldest son had a letter sorting game. He had to match the uppercase and the lowercase letters together. It’s such a simple activity, but adding in the mailbox brought it to a whole level of fun and it was a great preschool summer review activity to help him become kindergarten ready.
Use Fun Writing Supplies
Who wants to use a boring old pencil, when you can use something the smells good, has glitter, or is a funny shape?! We have a whole bucket full of fun markers, pens and pencils. Today’s choice: a blueberry smelling marker. We practiced patterns and smelled the blueberries while we practiced. It was a great way to get our lessons and reviewing in, all while keeping it fun. Such an easy kindergarten ready summer review idea for your preschooler!
Sidewalk Chalk Learning
Taking the learning outside is a great way to enhance kindergarten readiness. Sidewalk chalk is my go to for summer review. It can be used in so many ways. Here are just a few ideas:
- Create a hopscotch course. In each square write a letter, shape or a number. As you jump practice saying that letter, shape or number out loud. For added fun, say it in funny voices: Like a lion, in an opera voice, like a cowboy, etc.
- Draw a variety of letters, shapes and numbers on the driveway. Call one out and let your child run to stand on top of that letter, shape or number. Enhance their learning and call out deeper thinking questions like:
- “Stand on the letter that makes the sound Bbbbb.”
- “Stand on the shape with 4 sides.”
- “Stand on the number you make when you put 1 and 2 together.”
