6 Books to Read the First Week of School
The first week of school is such an exciting time, especially in the lower elementary classroom. Nerves and feelings are high, and students are ready to soak it all in. The first week of school is the best time to set the standard for your classroom, help students feel included, and comfortable. Today I am sharing 6 books to read the first week of school in your lower elementary classroom, along with resources to help you with each book.
“The Pout Pout Fish Goes to School”
“The Pout Pout Fish Goes to School,” is one of my very favorites for the first week. It introduces us to a little fish who gets lost the first day of school and finds himself in classrooms where he feels he just can’t do it. Until he learns when he is in the right place he can do work just right that’s meant for him! This is a great first week of school book and encourages students to try their best and to try new things.

“Time for School Little Blue Truck”
If you’ve been around Little Owl Academy for a while, you know we LOVE Little Blue Truck. This is another great addition to the little blue truck family that includes our favorite blue truck heading to school with his friends.

“First Day Jitters”
I absolutely love this book. This book is perfect for the very first day. Doesn’t everyone get the jitters the first day of school, even the teacher?! This book shows that it’s okay to feel a little nervous, that we all feel that way, and we can help each other along the way.

“How Do Dinosaurs Go to School”
Do you have dinosaur lovers in your lower elementary classroom? I just had to include “How Do Dinosaurs Go to School” on my 6 books to read the first week of school list because most younger children LOVE dinosaurs. This book teaches manners, and listening skills, and help students learn the appropriate ways to act at school- all in a fun silly story!

“If You Take a Mouse to School”
This is an adorable story about a little boy who takes a mouse to school. It shows the sequence of events of what happens as he goes throughout his fun activities of the day. This is a book that can be read more than just at the first week of school, but I think it gives the teacher a great opportunity to start talking about story structure, prediction, and themes in a story. It’s great to teach listening skills too!

“My Wild First Day of School”
Last, but definitely not least is “My Wild First Day of School.” This is a new to me book that I found this summer, and I LOVE it. It shows the first day of school if you went to school with a bunch of wild animals! I love that it shows a variety of animals (aka students) with different needs and actions, and it really helps you as the teacher introduce students to the idea that we’re all different but that we can all work together.
